CHAPTER ELEVEN
GRANDPARENTS: THE REWARD FOR NOT KILLING YOUR CHILDREN
The other day a friend asked me a very serious question.
She said, “January, if you had to do it all over again, would you have children?”
I didn’t even have to think about it.
I said, “NO! NO! NO!
I said it three times because I have three daughters, and I didn't want anybody accusing me of favoritism.
Again.
But then I explained:
If I had to do it all over again…
I’d skip the children and go directly to the grandchildren.
Much better arrangement.
Grandchildren are your reward for not killing your own children.
And the best part is, when you don't like what the grandchildren are doing…
YOU CAN SEND THEM HOME!
Grandchildren also say the most wonderful things because they have absolutely no filter.
When one of my grandsons was four years old, we were talking about our favorite things.
I said, “You know, sweetheart, YOU are one of my favorite things.”
He thought very seriously for a moment.
Then he said:
“Mor Mor, do you know what MY favorite things are?”
I said, “No, sweetheart. What?”
He said:
“Power Rangers and Big Boobies.”
Well.
I hadn't been aware of either preference.
But at that moment, I knew something for certain:
He was definitely his grandfather's grandson.
